Illustration Mentor

I chose Maurits Cornelis Escher (M.C. Escher for short) for my Illustration Mentor. He was a dutch graphic artist that was known very well for his drawing and printmaking, some of which were "mathematically inspired" and consisted of woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. He traveled to many places, including Italy and Spain, drawing inspiration from nature and using mathematical objects in his work, along with many reused things from nature, like lichens, insects and entire landscapes. He also did sketches of local architecture and entire cityscapes, all of this being early on in his career, and was later things he was recognized for by scientists and mathematicians alike, and in popular culture where his works have been used on many book and album covers. He was even a major inspiration for a book seven years after his death on the 27th of March, 1972 at the age of 73. Here are some of his most famous works.

My Illustration Style

I don't exactly have a style for the stuff I do on the computer, Photoshop or otherwise, so I thought I'd just show one of the best examples of my drawings I have from an old sketchbook.

(Note: I wasn't really good at drawing heads and faces back then, and I still am not, so that's why this drawing doesn't have a head)

Assignment #1

This illustration seems to be an intricate sketch filled in with color, and is meant as a representation of the beauty of the natural world and the cosmos. The artist is a man named Svabhu Kohli from India, and near as I can tell the intended audience of this illustration is those who enjoy the splendor of nature, and the purpose most likely to inspire an appreciation for it. I chose this illustration because I liked seeing what seemed to be a combination of all the beauty of nature and the cosmos put into a capsule shape, which appealed to me as a lover of natural sights and as a man fascinated by the wonders of space as well as enjoying the style of the illustration.
